Room 10 were privileged to be asked to create artwork inspired by Sarah Johnson's book the Bold Ship Phenomenal to display in the Books for Kids store in Hamilton East. We would like to say a huge thank you to the lovely ladies at Books for Kids who were generous and gave us a free book if we visited the store. Happy Birthday Books For Kids.

Haka, written by Patricia Grace

You will have noticed we have been reading Haka as our shared book. We talked about why the haka is so important to New Zealanders and how it is an important part of our culture. We also realised the haka, and there a many, have been handed down from generation to generation. The purpose may have changed for some over time, but its importance remains.

Pokemon Enlargements

Room 10 has been busy learning about enlarging Pokemon images. We found it a challenge to get the squares exactly the same, but we persevered with great results!

Minecraft Selfies

For maths we have been learning about area and perimeter. Once we created our selfies, we then calculated the area and perimeter of our images. We used a variety of  strategies, including addition and multiplication strategies. We also needed to find the fraction of each colour we used in our mini mes.

Thank you Mrs M (aka Miss Atkins) for the great idea. http://r9sminions.blogspot.co.nz/search/label/math

Brain Matters

Our artwork comes from the idea we can grow our brains. After a discussion about this, we were inspired to create a zentangle hiding symbols of how we learn and what motivates our learning.

We Love to Create.

Room 10 loves to create and build. The first part of the video clip shows our spaghetti towers (inspired by the book Iggy Peck Architect), where we had to plan and build our designs. The second part shows us building machines that were run by constructing a simple electrical circuit.

An example of our planning.

Reading Inspired by the Olympic Games

The Crunchies and Starbursts reading groups have been reading a novel from Epic Books, Olympic Miracle, by Peter Birle. As we read through the chapters we have completed learning activities to help us understand what we have been reading.

The Bald Eagle

We are super proud of our writing this week. It was a challenge, but worth the effort. Thank you to BBC UK for the use of their video clip. We wrote a script using vivid verbs, adjectives, similes and interesting language to narrate the video clip.

Getting Around New Zealand

This term, Room 10 has been learning to locate and plot New Zealand places on a Google Map. We have also been reading about New Zealand current events and plotting where the events took place. We have also been learning about some New Zealand authors and plotting places that our guided reading text took us.

A tribute to author, Sarah Johnson

You may have heard that we were very lucky to have New Zealand author, Sarah Johnson come to visit and share some author's tips to help us improve our writing. Sarah was absolutely amazing and a true inspiration to us all. We also recommend you check out her books, Wooden Arms and The Bold Ship Phenomenal, they are both great reads. As a way of thanking Sarah for sharing her time with us, Room 10 has been writing up a storm. Most of us are still in the editing and publishing stages, but Brooklyn has worked hard to get his tribute to Sarah finished. More will follow, so keep watching this space.

We Dare to Imagine

To kick off 2016, Room 10 watched the following Tedtalk by Nano Girl and have been inspired to use our imagination to dare to be who we want to be.
